Abstract
It is well known that serum cortisol levels show atypical circadian rhythm in 24 hours duration in normal adult. However, the time of emergence of the cortisol circadian rhythm in man; has not been clarified postnatally,- Thus in the present study, the age at which infants and children display a pattern of circadian rhythm of cortisol comparable to that of normal adult was investigated.
The radioimmunoassaY method was used to study the development of serm cortisol circadian rhythm in a total of 50 children. Patients with endocrine diseases, congenital anomalies and diseases of the central nervous system were excluded from this study.
A distinct circadian rhythm with an amplitude comparable to that, of an adult emerged of approximately 1 year after birth.
